Part 1 โ€” Reference Guide

What You're Designing

Over the next 4 weeks, your team will design an AI system that solves a real-world problem and pitch it at the end-of-year exhibition. The best ideas get actually built.

The Golden Rule

Start with a problem, not a technology. Don't say "we want to build a neural network." Say "students struggle to review for exams โ€” here's how AI helps."

What Makes a Strong Idea?

โœ… Strong Idea
  • Solves a specific, real problem
  • AI is genuinely needed (not a gimmick)
  • You can name the type of ML it uses
  • Acknowledges data needs and risks
  • Honest about its limitations
โŒ Weak Idea
  • "An AI that does everything"
  • Could be solved without AI at all
  • Vague about how it actually works
  • Claims 99% accuracy / perfection
  • No thought given to who could be harmed

ML Type Quick Reference

Use this to identify which type of ML fits your idea:

ML TypeWhat it doesExample use
ClassificationSorts inputs into categoriesSpam detector, disease diagnosis
RegressionPredicts a numerical valueHouse price prediction, traffic estimation
ClusteringGroups similar data without labelsCustomer segmentation, topic grouping
RecommendationSuggests items based on behaviourMovie recs, playlist generation
Generation (LLM/GenAI)Creates new content from promptsChatbots, writing tools, image gen
Computer VisionUnderstands images or videoObject detection, medical imaging
Reinforcement LearningLearns by trial and rewardGame-playing agents, robotics

What Your Pitch Must Include

Every team must address all 6 of these in their final presentation:

๐Ÿ’ก 18 Idea Starters (If You're Stuck)

These are not templates โ€” use them only if you need inspiration. The best ideas come from real problems YOU see in your daily life.

๐Ÿ“š Education & Learning

Study Aid

AI generates personalized quizzes from student notes using NLP

Homework Helper

Classifies homework questions by difficulty level + suggests similar problems

Teacher Assistant

Identifies struggling students from assignment patterns

๐Ÿค Community & Social Impact

Volunteer Matcher

Recommends NGOs to volunteers based on skills + interests (Lebanese focus)

Job Finder

Matches job seekers to entry-level positions based on skills + location

Donation Distributor

Recommends where donations should go based on community needs (classification)

๐Ÿ’ฌ Communication & Language

Arabic Translator

Translates Lebanese/Gulf dialect voice notes to Modern Standard Arabic (NLP)

Misinformation Detector

Flags suspicious news posts in Arabic social media (classification)

Chatbot Assistant

Answers school questions in Arabic 24/7 (retrieval-based NLP)

๐Ÿš— Transportation & Urban

Route Optimizer

Predicts fastest commute routes in Beirut considering traffic (prediction)

Parking Finder

Recommends parking spots based on time of day + location

Ride Sharer

Matches students going to same place for carpools

๐Ÿฅ Health & Wellness

Symptom Checker

Classifies symptoms to suggest doctor specialties (not diagnose!)

Medication Reminder

Predicts when elderly patients forget medications + sends reminders

Gym Recommendation

Recommends exercises based on fitness goals + preferences

๐ŸŒ Environment & Sustainability

Waste Classifier

Computer vision: photo of trash โ†’ sorted into recycling bins

Energy Predictor

Predicts home energy use + suggests savings (regression)

Tree Identifier

Computer vision: photo of tree โ†’ species identification + care tips

๐Ÿ’ผ Business & E-Commerce

Social Media Writer

AI generates social media captions for small Lebanese businesses

Product Recommender

Suggests items based on browsing history (recommendation)

Customer Service Bot

Chatbot that handles customer questions for online shops

๐ŸŽฏ How to Use These Starters

Pick one and ask: "What's the real problem this solves?" Then make it specific to YOUR context. E.g., not "study aid app" but "our school doesn't have a way for students to practice past exams. Our AI suggests similar questions from a database."

Part 2 โ€” Worksheet

Step 1: Individual Brainstorm

Before talking to your team, write 3 problem ideas on your own. Think about school, daily life, your community, Lebanon, the world.

Idea 1 โ€” The Problem
Idea 2 โ€” The Problem
Idea 3 โ€” The Problem

Step 2: Team Discussion

After sharing individually, record your team's top 2 ideas below.

Step 3: Idea Brief โ€” Due Next Class

Complete this as a team. This is your formal submission for Week 1.
